2013 Grasshopper Adventure Series – Geysers Pine Flat Video

I have this vision of Mig sitting around, looking at maps, and concocting the route for the fourth Grasshopper, He’s looks the part of a mad scientist and is chuckling away as he devises his evil plan…

Yes, the evil plan of riding up and over Geysers and then up and Up and UP… Pine Flat.

If you are unaware of either one of these named climbs, they are both two of Sonoma’s finest. And Pine Flat, which is *not* flat, ends with a pitch of 20%. And that meant hitting it 59 miles into the ride.

At least there were chips and soda at the finish!

Thanks to Mig and the crew, Arnot-Roberts Winery, and Osmo Nutrition for helping out with the feed.

Cheers!

2013 Grasshopper Adventure Series – Dirty Fort Ross Video

The third installment of the 2013 Grasshopper Adventure Series brought together a smaller but tougher (or maybe crazier) group of riders. The route would include long steep paved road climbs and descents as well as the infamous Old Caz dirt section. Luckily the dry weather meant the river crossing didn’t require life jackets.

Watch the craziness from start to finish. It was a spectacular day for riding… and suffering.
Thanks to Mig and the crew, Osmo Nutrition for helping out with the feed, and Fork Catering for the post race meal.

Cheers!

2013 Bantam Classic Video

The Bantam Classic was an under the radar event in the vein of the Spring Classics.

The route covered 45 miles and close to 3000 feet of climbing. It wound its way through the pot hole country roads of Sonoma and Marin counties.

Post ride delicious food was provided by Fork Catering and beer graciously provided by the good folks at Lagunitas Brewing. Pre and post ride performance fuel supplied by GU Energy.

2013 Grasshopper Adventure Series – Chileno Valley Video

In the world of “training rides”, the Hoppers are king for putting the pain in train. Chileno Valley is the second in the series and gifts us with 80 miles of road sprinkled with 7800+ feet of climbing. Sure, everyone could just take it easy and cruise those numbers. But that never seems to happen, at least to me. Starting out in a field of 300+ riders I think it’s not so bad. Stick with the pace, hang with the climbers, and keep up the effort. Oh but those efforts can burn the matches too fast! By 75 miles in, if you’ve made it that far, there will be thoughts of joy floating in your head. And it’s not euphoria. No, it’s Joy as in Joy Road. This last climb will have your legs begging for the gears from your mountain bike. I’ve done the paper boy weave on this road every-single-time.

But then the top rolls into view, riders and their bikes are sprawled about, bags of chips and cans of soda quickly being consumed. And it’s finished. And there is joy.
