King Ridge Dirt Supreme is the 6th event of the Grasshopper Adventure Series. It’s one long tough route. Miles and miles of road with short sections of tricky dirt to keep you honest. This is one of my favorites of the series but also one I always suffer on. Oh the pain, oh the joy.

Ground this video out from the Rock Lobster Cup III cyclocross race. It was held at Wilder Ranch in Santa Cruz in hot dry conditions. One big loop, up over and down. Rinse and repeat.

I raced the single-speed A category and suffered on the climb. But the rest wasn’t bad. The technical drop back down was ripping fun and only ate me once. But after the first lap I figured out the lines.

2017 Grasshopper Adventure Series #3 Super Sweetwater

Mig created a monster with this version of the 2017 Grasshopper Adventure Series Super Sweetwater event. To add to the fun, Mother Nature brought rain to the party. And if it wasn’t raining it was misting. And cold. And then there was a lot climbing.

But there were two route options this year. The first was the classic route that included the dirt and river crossing of Old Caz. This totaled around 70 miles and 9000 feet of climbing. Then there was the alternate all road option for those afraid of getting their booties dirty (insert sad face). This had 78 miles and 7163 feet of climbing.

2017 Grasshopper Adventure Series #2 Chileno Valley

The second event of the 2017 Grasshopper Adventure Series escaped the recent atmospheric river rains and had sunny beautiful weather. But that didn’t make the Chileno Valley Hopper that much easier. What was easier was the option to take a shorter route of 53 miles and 4947 feet of climbing. There was still the original long route of 80 miles and 6384 feet of climbing. Any that took the long option suffered greatly on the final climb up “Joy” Rd after 78 miles.

Had a chance to head down to the Central Coast Cyclocross Series for race #4 at Toro Park. This is a great venue and Keith and the crew setup a great course. And with almost no rain that meant there were hot dry dusty sections. But not all as the course twisted its way over several grassy portions. Perfect conditions to shake out my new SyCip single-speed CX bike.

A little late in the season but the timing worked out well. The fog rolled in the night before and the temperature was perfect for the 2015 Annadel mountain bike race.

Caught a few moments here and there from the race. Battery gave up the ghost shortly after the Lawndale descent.

Always a good time at this event. Bike Monkey does a great job running this and all their other events.

The Bantam Classic is no longer a spring chicken as it moves into its third year. Along with the usual suspects, fame and glory brought out more big guns, and with that a big battle to be the first to reach “mama chicken”. Watch the action and look out for feathers flying.

This was the last of the Grasshopper Adventure Series for 2015. And it was the icing on the pain cake.
A total of 83 miles and 8800 feet climbing with a mix of road and dirt. I cracked before the final climb up Willow Creek but was able to spin my way to the end. Ouch.

I raced all three days and enjoyed and suffered the whole time. The new 8 hr course was a blast but definitely a butt kicker compared to the previous year’s. The hill climb hurt and then came back to remind me through the ache in my legs and lungs. The Super-D was a screaming great time.

The social side of the whole weekend also eases the pain of the racing. Bacon hand-ups, BBQs, random camp fires, lots of great people, it all rocks.

It’s the new year and cyclocross is still going strong in NorCal. Drove down to Monterey still heavy from holiday cookies and celebrations for the 8th race of the CCCX Cyclocross Series. Brought the single-speed so I would suffer the most but keep it simple. The wet weather has made the Fort Ord course nice and tacky. Lots of fun ripping the berms and leaning the corners where normally that would send you in the sea of poison oak.

2014 Bay Area Super Prestige Series Race 6 Master 45A

The Bay Area Super Prestige series finished at the popular Coyote Point venue. Although the coyotes have long since been run out, the racers did their best to roam around in packs, chasing and gnawing on each other’s heals.

The course offered up the familiar short steel hill at the start, a new sand section that messed with everyone, the beach that was now rideable, long flat fast sections, the gravel pit of shame, and a bit of grass here and there.

The sky finally opened and unleashed the moisture that has been withheld from NorCal for oh so long. And the parched earth drank it up in greedy gulps. Throughout the cyclocross world sighs of joy arose and then chants of ‘There will be mud’. ‘There will be mud’. And mud there was!

Feast your eyes on the muck and mire of NorCal racing at the Surf City Cyclo-X finals. Held at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds in Watsonville, a venue quite worthy of this event. The Surf City crew dished up a tough course. Even more so when raced on a single-speed (oh I am a fool).

Here was the second of a two day race weekend for the BASP Series. The weather held out and conditions were great at Candlestick. Rain earlier in the week gave the course tacky conditions with only a few soft spots.

The BASP series returns to Candlestick for two days of racing. The crew spread the fields out across the two days so as to give every category it’s own race, no stacking of categories, no mixing with chum, a mano y mano battle amongst your peers.

The Surf City crew pulled us up on to the top of the mountain to race at the CAL FIRE Training Center. Last year’s race at this venue was dry and dusty! Lucky for us that it rained earlier in the week and the conditions were far better. Still some dust kicking up later in the day but overall the conditions were good. The sun didn’t want to participate though. Overcast and chilly most of the day. Good when racing but tough before and after.

The tough Stafford Lake venue in Marin County was the location of the third race of the NCCX series. Murphy didn’t bring out his infamous “Cess Pool of Filth” but he did have his “Belgian Farm Wall”. And then there were the bumpy dirt/grass sections that reminded me of an Oakland city street. Wait, no, Oakland city streets are worse.

This was the first race of the three race Surf City Cyclo-X series. Aptos High School kindly offered up their grounds for the venue. Always a great location with a tricky mix of terrain. Especially so for the singlespeed racers as you will see in this video. Riding too big of gears meant paying a painful price. Luckily the fun course made up for that.

The first race of the Surf City Cyclo-X Series brings us back to Aptos High School for a spooky good time. Being so near to Halloween, the day included a costume race as well as a kiddy race with even more costumes.

Surrounding those events were the hard core no costume events. And hard core was what this course was about. There were the familiar features but some new tricky sections had been tossed in. One of which caused many hearts to peak out and legs to seize up. That would be the killer sandy run-up. Ouch!

The Bike Monkey crew served up a flat and fast course at the Place To Play park in Santa Rosa. This location has been on the menu and the course was similar. But an extended route on the east end and some small adjustments for it made the race even better.

And it was still hot. NorCal just keeps cooking. The fog broke just after the start of the Masters A Men’s race and it just got hotter and hotter. Dang.

The second race of the NCCX series brought us back to Fairfax after a hiatus for construction. The venue still offered up a unique combination of dirt, grass, pavement, twists and turns within a school, and some very sketchy graded dirt.

It was a blast to be back and the racing was a ton of fun. Technical, the way I like it.

The NorCal Cyclocross Series began in Vallejo at one of the best courses in the bay area. This little gem is hidden within view of Six Flags theme park with all of its crazy rides and trapped animals.

Lots of grass, a few hills, some technical features, and temperatures hitting the 90’s made for a tough day of racing.

The mountain bike racing season is wrapping up and what better way to send if off than the Annadel XC race. And this year the weather was playing along and kept the fog around later than normal. That gave us a nice cool feeling for the blistering fast start. It wasn’t until heading up through the middle of the park when the sun really started to pop through and begin the slow roast. No matter! It’s racing and it’s a blast.

The 2014 FUCI Approved sticker has arrived!

Subtle (or not) features of this year’s sticker are the piles of cash (payoffs, bribes, etc) and the bottle of whiskey with shot glass (back room deals, drugs, etc). These may also represent handups which should not be a crime. All of this leads to the “shame” of the UCI.

And this year’s FUCI bike selection… a Fat Bike! Definitely not UCI Approved.

2014 Lake Sonoma Series - Race 2

Had the chance to head to Sonoma for the 2nd race of the 2014 Lake Sonoma Series. This is a very fun but tough event. The riding there consists of single-track and fire roads. The single-track is a blast but tricky, rocky in places, with loose gravel, and thick dry grass. Oh, and the climbs are short steep and punchy. The promoters put together a great deal with the race and a BBQ and drinks afterwards. Always a fun crowd of all categories mixing it up.

2014 Grasshopper #4 - Geysers / Pine Flat

This here ride is one of the classics in Sonoma County. It has several ingredients to make you savor the flavor. A nice leisurely cruise through the vineyards. A beautiful and gradual climb up a canyon to the geysers (hot springs). A quick little descent back to the vineyards. And then one more stroll up to the “flat” area with creeks and pine trees.

One of the toughest of the Grasshopper Adventure Series, the Sweetwater, piled on the pain this time. The route strung together Sweetwater, Old Caz, Fort Ross, and then ended with a climb up Coleman Valley from Hwy 1. Ouch. It. Hurt.

The cyclocross season is quickly coming to an end. And here we have the final race of the NorCal Cyclocross Series. The new venue was in San Jose and a short splash from Raging Waters. Watch the single-speed A men race across the soft grass, up and down the waterside hill, tread through the sand pit… twice! And of course there’s the Murphy Mud Pit ™. Argh. Sand + Mud = hurt! But it was all good and hopefully we will have this venue back again for next year.

Just found this photo of me from 1997? during the NORBA Nationals downhill race at Mount Snow Vermont. That’s my Intense M1 and one of the first inexpensive long travel forks (6"!) from Zzyzx. That was a tricky fun section of the course where we dropped down a fire road and then cut off right over a small hump. The speed and trajectory caused you to float sideways and almost off the course. In the photo you can see the launch point to the left where the grass is kicked up. I’m a couple of feet off the ground at this point and drifting to the left. Wow that was fun…

Here’s the single-speed A category at the fourth race of the Bay Area Super Prestige Series at Candlestick Park. The course was the best yet after a mid-week shower prepped the conditions for the weekend. No dust, tacky corners, and clear weather made for a great combination.

The second race of the Santa Rosa CX Cup series was held at a new venue, the First Baptist Church of Windsor. Thanks goes out to Pastor Lance, also a fellow cx racer, for helping provide a needed space to race.

The course was a twisty mix of grass, gravel, pavement, and wood chips. The latter section zipping in and around the small playground area where spectators good swing and heckle as the racers powered through.

The Surf City crew wrangled up a new venue way up in the hills above Santa Cruz. There they found the CAL FIRE Training Facility along Empire Grade Road. The course wound its way in and around the facility on gravel roads, dirt roads, single-track, and freshly graded field. Those freshly graded sections turned into dust baths for all. Not a face wasn’t plastered with layers of brown after rolling through the finish. But it was all worth it as the course offered up plenty of action and made for some fast hard racing.

2013 Grasshopper Adventure Series - Lake Sonoma

This is the final “training ride” of the series and it’s a mountain bike event… well, except for the rare few that might bring their cyclocross bikes (rock on oh crazy ones!). The trails around Lake Sonoma are a mix of single-track, double-track, some fire road, and a whole lot of pain.

We all hear that ‘What goes up must come down’. The route here gives strong support for this saying since it reinforces it hundreds of times over and over and over. Climb up, drop down, climb up, drop down, climb up, climb up… oops, ok, there are moments where the course tricks you and ‘what goes up’ must go up some more. Ouch!

The Bantam Classic was an under the radar event in the vein of the Spring Classics.

The route covered 45 miles and close to 3000 feet of climbing. It wound its way through the pot hole country roads of Sonoma and Marin counties.

In the world of “training rides”, the Hoppers are king for putting the pain in train. Chileno Valley is the second in the series and gifts us with 80 miles of road sprinkled with 7800+ feet of climbing. Sure, everyone could just take it easy and cruise those numbers. But that never seems to happen, at least to me. Starting out in a field of 300+ riders I think it’s not so bad. Stick with the pace, hang with the climbers, and keep up the effort. Oh but those efforts can burn the matches too fast! By 75 miles in, if you’ve made it that far, there will be thoughts of joy floating in your head. And it’s not euphoria. No, it’s Joy as in Joy Road. This last climb will have your legs begging for the gears from your mountain bike. I’ve done the paper boy weave on this road every-single-time.

The combination of long flat sections and a few short steep climbs makes it tricky to pick the right gearing. Too easy and spin out in the flats. Too hard and choke on the hills. Oh, and the previous rains created a few soft sections which added to the suffering. Ah the joys of racing!

The event was to be held at Golden Gate Park but a last minute decision forced a switch over to Candlestick Park. Luckily the weather helped out and dumped a lot of rain in the days before the event. This softened the ground, brought out the green, and made for an enjoyable course.

Note: Captured this with my new GoPro Hero3 set to 720/60, Protune enabled, and color temp 5500K. And the colors came out crap :( This is even after spending time attempting to color correct. Something is definitely wrong with the camera or their encoding because the colors are way off. Just note the blue tint on the number plates during the run-up. Then look at the fringing between the sky and the trees. Not happy at all.

Full weekend of racing with Central Coast on Saturday and Livermore and Sacramento CX on Sunday. Tossed a coin a dropped in on Livermore for a taste of their single-speed racing.

It’s still hot and dry in Livermore and we paid for it. Lots of suffering on this twisty and loose course. Oh, and the run-up of 40 steps was icing on the cake.

Race Report

Ok, well yes this is a race report… Wasn’t meant to be one. But I was sitting at Cole coffee sipping my nicely done cappuccino when I spotted two CX bikes. They were the bikes of Team Jortz. I asked about what ride they were planning on doing. ‘Ride? No, we’re off to CCCX to race. Aren’t you?’ they said. ‘Nope. I’m a little fried from too much work and too little riding this week’ I replied. So off they went leaving little ‘ole loser me to drown my guilt in my coffee. As I sat there my mind began to spin and I recalled that my buddy Phil had called Friday to ask about car pooling to the race. So I called with thoughts that he would already be on the road. It wouldn’t hurt to call. But he answers and he’s just getting in his car to head to the race. ‘Let’s go race!’ he says. I waffle a moment then decide what the heck! A quick walk home to gather things and figure out the state of my singlespeed cx bike. The state is 2 flat tires, 1 of which is tubeless and the other tubed, no pedals, and a dirty chain. Argh. Ok, I start running around finding pedals, looking for sealant, and getting the bike running. Phil arrives just as both tires are filled and, knock on wood, holding air. Find the pedals and attach them. Then Phil begins loading my other gear as I make final adjustments. And then we are off to the races!

This is the first time that the Mendocino Woodlands State Park has ever allowed a mountain bike race on their property! THE ROUTE IS FANTASTIC!

It’s about 10 miles per lap with roughly 1800 feet of vertical per lap. Two ups, two downs. The climbs are littered with passing areas and there is one choice of short/steep or shallow/longer for you each lap as well. The downhills are like bobsled runs. We are grooming, pruning and manicuring the trails between now and race day. Buff, smooth and fast. If you’ve never raced singletrack before, this is a great route to jump into it on. If you are superpro you can make it as terrifying as you like, simply by going faster. NOTE: 810mm bars not recommended.

Felt halfway alive on this one. The start was nice since we rolled down Bohemian and then over and down Hwy 1. This allowed me some time to warm up. When we hit the first steep longer climb a little after Jenner, I settled back and a large portion of the pack pulled away. I could have pushed it a bit harder to stick with them but I knew it was a long race and this climb connected with Meyers Grade which was even harder. So I kept a good RPM and spun up. At Meyers I continued with an even pace and started to catch a few riders.

The footage begins with the A racers blasting off on the first lap. Then 3/4 way through it transitions to the third lap and the B leaders charging back up towards the start/finish.

Welcome to the start of the 2011 Bay Area Super Prestige Cyclocross Series. Watch the master 45+ A men chase down the young punks… um, I mean the 35+ A men, at Candlestick park.

Lots to see here in the first lap of the race. Look for the inaugural appearance of the infamous fly-over (awesome). Then there were the piles of snow, buckets of mud, and… well, not really. It was 80+ with no shade on the course. Toss in sand, dust, dry grass, gravel, a few rollers, three or so barriers, and you have a fun technical course.

This “rally” included a mix of city riding, semi-rural roads, fire roads and single-track. The East Bay is very hilly and this was no exception. Steep hill climbs, bumpy downhill dirt descents, dirt climbs and whatever else can be thrown at you. Bike of choice is the one that you will have fun on and will get you through the course safely. A cross bike would do the trick, but so would a nice hardtail with skinny tires. Hell, even a road bike with fatty tires will suffice, although not recommended.

2011 Berkeley High MTB Team Hill Climb Time Trial #3 Video

Third and final hill climb time trial of the season for the Berkeley High School MTB Team.

It’s just over a mile long and 510 feet of climbing. Riders were started at 30 second intervals.

The start is the gate at the junction of Quarry and Big Springs where they meet South Park road. From there you head across the parking area and up Big Springs fire road (south). Upon reaching the ridgeline, take a left at the intersection and continue to the peak. Watch out for the false summit, it fools many.

Larry, Kelly, and I started over in Corte Madera and headed up from Phoenix Lake to Four Corners. Then over to and around the golf course and onto Bolinas Fairfax Road. Started seeing more and more riders.

At the ridge we turned off the pavement and onto the fireroad to Pine Mountain. Lots of other riders from there on.

Along with the story she mentions “I know it would’ve helped me alot if this information had been available when I was lost in the land of one arm. I have attached my ridiculously long account”. She then adds that I may post the story if I wish.

Added the video for the Women’s category from the Central Coast Cyclocross race #2.

Note, I had some problems with the helmetcam. It wonked out (technical term :’) and the colors were all messed up. Half the video was missing one of the primary colors. So I worked around it by making the helmet cam portion black & white. Therefore, this will be the retro video.
