Justin Herman Plaza Fountain Animated

Here’s an animated gif of the fountain in Justin Herman Plaza (San Francisco). I created it by first capturing around 100 photos from various angles. These were then uploaded into the Autodesk Recap 360 cloud application for conversion into a model. This is a free service that can create 3D models from photos. Once the model was created I exported the mesh file to my laptop and then loaded that file with another free application, Memento. This second application let me cleanup parts of the model and save the result.

A time-lapse view from the Berkeley High pit during race #2 of the 2012 NorCal High School MTB League series.

The view is of the “Pit Zone” with the start/finish off in the distance. You can spot the uphill start in the upper left. Started recording around 8am and stopped around 5pm.

Lots of wind, rain, some hail, and spots of sun during the day. One gust knocked the camera over (sideways shot).

Nature photography is difficult! I made the effort today to capture one of the Great White Herons that hang out along the waterway near my office. The photos above are two of the best. The first was easy since the Heron was just waiting on the fence… and the second after he got too much attention and flew off.

Another poor bird mistook one of our office windows for airspace and ended its flight prematurely.

On closer examination it was revealed that many of the passengers on this flight survived the horrific accident. As I hovered overhead they waved their antennae to attract my attention. Sadly, I was in no mood to rescue them and they remained stranded in the wilderness.

It’s that time of year again and our backyard is a playground for spiders. Had the wonderful experience the other night of walking down the steps and having a web wrap itself around my face. Let’s just say I dropped what I was carrying and quickly went into spastic arm movements as I attempted to wipe off the web the … BIG … FAT … SPIDER … that always sits in the middle. Even after an all clear mirror check for any signs of the beastie I still kept feeling spider tickles. Shudder.

I did a little experimental photography with my puppy dog. I shot two photos of the same subject (that would be Hairy dog) but from two slightly askew positions. Once the images were loaded on my computer I opened them in Photoshop. I copied the second photo and pasted it as a new layer on the first photo. Next I needed to align the images. Using the transparency slider, I adjusted the second photo (top layer) until I could see the bottom photo showing through.

Below the waterfall were several little stone piles sitting upon the boulders. These piles added an interesting mix to the scene. They resembled little rock people waiting around. Waiting for something or someone. What were they waiting for? The next big flood of water to wash them back into the stream? No, they must be waiting for a sign, for some direction, for someone to lead them! I heard their call and took to the task. Into the chilly water I went, collecting and building until they had their wish.

We were up near Yosemite last weekend. Hiked up to a nice waterfall and swimming hole. While wading through the cool refreshing (actually ice flippin cold) water, this cool wood chip floated past. It’s got nice colors and patterns. Marisha captured a photo and then I sent it sailing on its way through the rapids.

Here’s a photo that might force you to laugh and cry at the same time. I keep thinking of the joke “What goes through a bug’s head just before hitting a windshield?”.

This poor bird hit full on into the window, wings outstretched, and left its mark. Nobody was around when the collision occurred. And there was no sign of the bird on the ground below. Maybe it recovered and flew away, although with a little less weight. As you can see from the photos, it expelled some extra “weight”. Maybe that weight kept it from being able to avoid the collision at the last moment. They say it’s dangerous flying with too much of a load.

Along came a spider and sat down beside her, and frightened Miss Muffet away!

Well, it was almost like that. This cute spider dropped out of an Oak tree and hovered just above a friend’s head at our dinner the other night. It’s body is about the size of a quarter. As it hung there I grabbed the camera and moved in for a shot. Had to manually focus and snap a flash shot. Even after a few glasses of wine I somehow I managed to get a clean shot.

Italian Snail

Here’s one of the billions of snails that would crawl out and about whenever the rain passed through our town in the Dolomites. This one in particular is about 4cm across at the widest.

Our house caretaker Hermann explained that the locals will collect them to make meals. I being a non-snail eater made a face and said “ugh”. That must of translated clearly and Hermann laughed, nodded, and said “Ja ja. Ugh!” We both then had a laugh and watched our not so little friend crawl away.

Here is a panoramic photo from our vacation house in the town of St. Cristina, Italy. The town is located in the middle of the Dolomites. Over to the right is a great example of the amazing mountain formations all around the Dolomites.

Following the valley up and to the left leads to Passo Sella and Passo Gardena. The Sella was on the route of the Giro d’Italia this year.

Spent the weekend down in Monterey and got a chance to take the pup hiking in Garland Ranch Regional Park. This is a great park that allows dogs.

Spotted these Shooting Stars on a portion of the trail. The wild flowers are starting to pop up around here. Lots of rain has helped but the recent cold spells are hurting. This bunch looked happy though.

Took the dog out for a walk over in the Berkeley hills and came across a small pond filled with newts. Not just a few but hundreds of newts. And they appeared to be in a crazed newt orgy! It’s been proven that so much Viagra is being consumed that trace amounts are now measurable in the tertiary water fed back into public drinking water. Well, maybe these newts are taking advantage of that :')

Here’s a wind blown Hairy during our Loch Leven Lakes backpacking trip. He was one happy dog running about out there. We also made sure he wore his Ruff Wear boots for most of the hike. They saved his paws.

One of the reasons he was so happy was the abundance of lizards. He never caught any. But he sure kept busy trying.

Point Isabel is a wonderful dog park in the east bay. The park’s 20 acres are on the waterfront and have sweeping views of San Francisco, Marin, and the Berkeley hills. There’s even a dog wash facility and cafe.

Hairy, beng a social dog, is as happy as can be when at the park. There’s always other pups to sniff and chase and do the things they do.

I pulled this photo out of my archive. It was taken in Washington Square Park during Fleet Week in 1996. The Blue Angels were making their runs over San Francisco. I liked the mix of the war birds flying above Saints Peter and Paul Church.

The unique look is from a high pass filter. I liked the depth and shading the filter brought out from the image.

One of my tomato plants is loaded down with fruit… er, I mean vegetables. Gosh, shouldn’t tomatoes be called fruit? I had to do some quick research about this. Here are some links I found:

This is one of a billion that hang out in our yard. They are amazing because of the size of some of their webs. I measured one that had been strung across a space 15ft/5m. Always fun walking through one those webs and wondering where the beasty ended up. That then leads to the ghostly spider crawling on me tickles.

I’m ending my second month off the bike since crashing and busting up my shoulder. The crash on my mountain bike wasn’t spectacular, but it did its job. Here is an Xray of some of the damage plus my previous collar bone (clavicle) fracture. Notice the top right edge of my humerus (head of arm) and the sliver. That’s the chunk of bone (greater tuborosity) that was wacked off. Probably from smacking into the acromion bone.

Some of the cows that roam Briones park like to gather near this gate in the evening. They will bunch themselves up into a tight group against the gate and fence. Maybe they feel safer with one side protected.

Whatever the reason, the result is that they leave lots of fresh piles ‘o poop to step over and around when entering the park the following morning. Splotch! Mmmm.

Cows Under A Weird Sky

Walking the dog in Briones park sometimes involves interacting with the cows. These two came up to check us out. I grabbed the photo but didn’t like the blown out sky (too bright). So I fooled around with it and this variation perked my interest.

A moment after I grabbed the first photo, the black cow became curious enough to check out the little cow walking with me.

I found this while digging through my piles of digital photos and thought I should add it to the site. It was taken on the road up to the top of the Tourmalet. This is the infamous pass that the Tour de France has used to torture racers. This portion of the road isn’t used. It connects with the paved portion which drops over the pass and heads down the valley beyond. A day or two earlier I had rode to the top and watched the 2003 race. It was an incredible site with all the fans, media, and the roar and excitement as the first racers came into view. And the speed of the leaders, that is always beyond belief.

I spotted this cool flower or fruit or whatever growing along an old rock wall. Ants were climbing all over it but they must have been camera shy when I grabbed the shot. I thought the red pieces looked like Red Hots candies. Though tempting, I decided not to try one.

Went for a hike in the hills near Burnsville, NC and spotted these niblets of ice along a waterfall. A light spray was drifting over, collecting, and freezing to form these treasures.

Golden Gate Bridge Cables

Grabbed a shot of the north tower of the Golden Gate Bridge the other day on my commute home. I always try to carry my Canon G3 in my backpack so that I can grab a photo if something inspires me. This time it was the colors of the bridge from the sun setting and the lines from the cables leading to the tower.

I recommend trying to carry a camera whenever you can. Not just a phone camera, but one with higher resolution. Then, try to take at least one photo a day.

Gorbeia Basque Cycling Panorama

Cycling in the Basque region is a wonderful experience. There are kilometers and kilometers of low traffic roads. On this day we were making a counter clockwise loop around Gorbeia. This photo looks back up a foggy valley after a long descent. I wish I could remember the exact location. It’s north east of Gorbeia.

While heading to dinner the other night I spotted this new fountain on the corner of Lombard and Divisadero. But wait, what’s a fountain doing there?

Oh, I see, it’s not a fountain. A car has parked itself up on the sidewalk and decapitated a fire hydrant.

Oops, looks like the car has also added a new entrance to the building.

Little Shop 'Vergara 33' Bilbao, Spain

This is one of the many little shops in the old section of Bilbao, Spain. What a beautiful shop with all your quick gourmet needs. Fresh fruit, vegetables, cheese, a small meat counter in back, dry goods, sauces, and on and on and on. I stopped in and picked up a small hunk of Manchego cheese, several cuts of jamón ibericó, and a jar of cornichons. Just looking at the shop shows that the owner cares about their products and appearance.

Old Oak Tree :: Briones Park

There are some really great old oak trees around here. The twists and turns of the branches form interesting patterns. It’s as if the oak’s roots had decided to grow up rather than down. A great mass of roots, twisting about, but reaching for the open air rather than water and food. This photo is of a small portion of an old oak’s branches.

High Tension Lookout

While on a morning dog walk I stopped under one of the high tension power lines that cross the park. The buzzing of the lines caught my attention. I looked up and liked the geometric patterns I saw. So I took several shots as I experimented with alignments and zooms.
