CNC Milling a Penny

This is a model of a penny I created using a Image2Surface script I wrote for Autodesk Fusion 360. With the script I was able to import a heightmap image of a penny and generate a mesh. I wanted to mill the model so I then converted the mesh to a t-spline surface. Fusion 360 doesn’t yet support milling meshes.

Once I had the t-spline, I created a block body for a base and then placed the t-spline atop that.

These are cups that I designed and based on the Yin and Yang symbols. A pair of these will cleanly mate together and form a circle.

I modeled these in Autodesk Fusion 360. I used the manufacturing (CAM) support to generate the CAM for machining them out of 6061 aluminum using a Haas VF 2SS mill.

I found our theme camp after a little panning and zooming. As you can see above I timed it perfectly and was standing on the camper when the satellite flew over and snapped the photo. It does look like I got a bit sunburned though.

I started up my mail program, walked away, and came back a moment later to see that it was downloading hundreds of bounced emails.

What the frack?!?!

I canceled the session and hopped over to my web email reader. There in my mailbox were hundreds more. I checked the headers and saw what I knew I would find. I was the unlucky recipient of a spammer’s use of " Email Spoofing" (also " Email Fraud").

I just viewed an awesome trailer for the new Japanese movie Casshern. From the photos and the trailer on the website this looks to be a mind blowing visual extravaganza. The movie is a live-action anime with a Matrix and Blade Runner feel to it.

I wonder if it will make it to theatres here in the states?

Print out your Acme Voodoo Doll Kit (tm). Then, locate a pair of sharp scissors. Oh, we like scissors… Now, cut out the Acme Voodoo Doll (tm) and the Acme Voodoo Pins (tm). If you cut yourself, save the blood in a little dixie cup for later. Grab one from the water cooler at work, but don’t let your fellow workers see you. Workers always get pissy when someone steals the cups and drips blood in them.
Select the person that is the target of the ritual. This should be rather simple since we all have that “one” person that “deserves” a little special treatment. You know who I am talking about… that pesky neighbor, your girl/boy friend, that guy always hanging out near the water cooler, or your boss! Go ahead, write all the names down, we can handle them all.
Got your victim? Good. Now write their name on the front of the Acme Voodoo Doll (tm). If you have some blood saved from earlier, use it! All the better to write their name and it looks cool.
Now the fun part. Take one of the Acme Voodoo Pins (tm) in your left hand. Yes, the left hand, you know the wicked hand, the hand the nuns forced you not to write with since it was the devil’s… You get the idea.
Place an image of the person in your mind. Begin thinking about all the bad things that person has done to you. Work up a good lather but don’t froth at the mouth.
Ready? Raise your left hand high above your head. Feel the power of the pin and your curse about to be unleashed. Now bring your hand down to the doll and stick the Acme Voodoo Pin (tm) into the Acme Voodoo Doll (tm). Mash it in. Raise and stick again and again. Feel the energy? Feel the transfer of bad into the doll? Yes, it is good. If you hear a yelp down the hall or in the next cubicle… well, make sure nobody was watching or they might “pin” you to it.

Broken clavicle (collar bone)!

Broken collarbone

I broke my left clavicle (collar bone) at the Folsom Criterium in the Masters 35+ 1/2/3 race. Start of the last lap of my second race. Some idiot clips the bars of the guy next to him, sending the guy down, directly in front of me. Curb and fence on the left and pack on the right. I was able to just avoid him but had to run over his bike. Ejected at 28mph.

I have used the product Zanfel once before for a bad case of poison oak. You can read my previous article. But what is in Zanfel that makes it work?

You can find the list of ingredients on the product packaging and also by searching the web. But, the specific active ingredient that does all the magic appears missing. The website notes that “U.S. and Foreign Patents Pending” so they probably don’t need to give away the secret just yet.

Funny Job Titles :: Phlebotomist

Some job titles just have a funny ring to them. For example, I would never be a “phlebotomist”. The name alone makes me giggle. I wouldn’t be able to hold a straight face any time I said it. Imagine being at a party (in screenplay format):

Stranger So, what do you do? Me I’m a… well… a phlebotomist. Stranger Eh, a what? Me A phlebotomist. Stranger I see. Is that related to botany? Me No. It’s… Stranger Wait! Don’t tell me. A person that works with the throat? You know, because of phlem? Me No, not even close. It’s phlebotomist. p-h-l-e-B-o-t-o… Stranger Phleboto? Phleboto? Wait, I remember now… It was my trip to the tropics. Me Tropics? Stranger Yes. I remember now. Phleboto, phleboto… Phlebotomus! Yes, that’s it! Me No, that’s not… Stranger Yes, yes it is. Clear as day. Phlebotomus, man-biting sandflies! Nasty little buggers. Got me all over. Had me itching in places I normally wouldn’t talk about. Me Yes, well, I’m sorry to hear about that. Stranger Yeah, you’re a bug person! Wow, what a unique job. So, can you help me with the itching? I could show you the bites. Me Er, um, no.

Hard Drive Death : Rebirth

I now have a new replacement hard drive and my system is up and running. While my computer was down I started looking around for a drive. Because of the time it was taking I considered buying one so I could use my computer. I would then add the warranty replacement as a secondary drive.

I found a Western Digital 160 GB drive on sale “after rebate” for under $200. Great drive and a smoking price. The size is perfect for the video editing I am doing. So I bought the drive.

As I mentioned previously, my hard drive decided to die on me. Still in the warranty time frame, Dell support came to replace it but brought the wrong size drive. Rescheduled for installation the following day.

So, the following day I get a message from a tech support person. I call back and he starts verifying my address and phone number. Well, for some reason he has my work address and an old phone number. He was able to get my work number since he recognized the company name.

Hard Drive Death

My hard drive started letting out death squeaks the other night while I was working on one of my videos. Everything froze up while the drive let out its death song. I had to cold boot to stop the system.

Luckily the system booted back up and I was able to test the drive. It only ate the temp file that was being written at the time. Also found some unused sectors that were bad.

Google not really ignoring common words?

If you search on google for “photos of snow”:

My website has a hit on the first page. But, google indicates that the “of” is a common word and is not included in the search. But, if you then search for “photos snow”:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=photos+snow

The results are different and my site doesn’t show up in the top results.

Therefore, contrary to what Google says, these “common” words are significant in searches.

Manchester State Park Flowing Tidal Pool Video

Here are two small clips that I shot with my Sony TRV30 video camera. They are both from a spot near Manchester State Park up along the Northern California coast.

There is a channel between the mainland and the rocky flats along the ocean. Water collects on the rocks then flows down into the channel. The flow of the water changes as waves enter and fill the channel and then release.

I shot some helmet cam footage of the Downieville downhill course. The course runs down Butcher Ranch, Second Divide, and then First Divide.

The flat fire road section at the start of the trail. This is the section that requires a lot of pedaling during the downhill race.
