What are you looking at? I'm outa here! Nature photography is difficult! I made the effort today to capture one of the Great White Herons that hang out along the waterway near my office. The photos above are two of the best. The first was easy since the Heron was just waiting on the fence... and the second after he got too much attention and flew off. I tested various settings on my camera (D200) to capture the dynamic nature

(click on any photo to display full size) I recently upgraded to a Nikon D200 digital camera. My trusty Canon G3 was still functional but it just never gave me the feel and functionality I wanted. I missed shooting "through the lens" and through real lenses. I still have my Nikon FE which I got way back in high school. That camera biased me. I wanted that feel and that quality. (click for cool closeup view) Another poor bird mistook one of our office windows for airspace and ended its flight prematurely. On closer examination it was revealed that many of the passengers on this flight survived the horrific accident. As I hovered overhead they waved their antennae to attract my attention. Sadly, I was in no mood to rescue them and they remained stranded in the wilderness.

[ Click image to view photo gallery ] This year's (2006) Burning Man was my first adventure out to the playa. It was an amazing experience. The works of art, machinery, lights, sounds, people were a whirlwind of sensations. It's not a trip for all to take. But for some with open minds and a taste for alkaline dust, it's a something not to be missed.

Below the waterfall were several little stone piles sitting upon the boulders. These piles added an interesting mix to the scene. They resembled little rock people waiting around. Waiting for something or someone. What were they waiting for? The next big flood of water to wash them back into the stream? No, they must be waiting for a sign, for some direction, for someone to lead them! I heard their call and took to the task. Into the chilly

This is one of a billion that hang out in our yard. They are amazing because of the size of some of their webs. I measured one that had been strung across a space 15ft/5m. Some of the cows that roam Briones park like to gather near this gate in the evening. They will bunch themselves up into a tight group against the gate and fence. Maybe they feel safer with one side protected. Whatever the reason, the result is that they leave lots of fresh piles 'o poop to step over and around when entering the park the following morning. These little orange mushrooms have been popping up all over the place. They especially like the piles of twigs and leaves that collect on the hillsides.

Here's a funny mushroom. Looks like a finger or maybe the long tongue of some creature. Once I spotted this one I noticed that they were all over the ground. Very cool.

This little escargot (French for snail) was crawling along the forest floor on a hike I was on near Chamonix, France. Collect enough of these and you would have a meal. Now what was that recipe for escargot with butter and garlic? :')

Grabbed a shot of the north tower of the Golden Gate Bridge the other day on my commute home. I always try to carry my Canon G3 in my backpack so that I can grab a photo if something inspires me. This time it was the colors of the bridge from the sun setting and the lines from the cables leading to the tower. I recommend trying to carry a camera whenever you can. Not just a phone camera,

[ click image for a full-size version ] Cycling in the Basque region is a wonderful experience. There are kilometers and kilometers of low traffic roads. On this day we were making a counter clockwise loop around Gorbeia. This photo looks back up a foggy valley after a long descent. I wish I could remember the exact location. It's north east of Gorbeia.

This is one of the many little shops in the old section of Bilbao, Spain. What a beautiful shop with all your quick gourmet needs. Fresh fruit, vegetables, cheese, a small meat counter in back, dry goods, sauces, and on and on and on. I stopped in and picked up a small hunk of Manchego cheese, several cuts of jamón ibericó, and a jar of cornichons. Just looking at the shop shows that the owner cares about their products and

There are some really great old oak trees around here. The twists and turns of the branches form interesting patterns. It's as if the oak's roots had decided to grow up rather than down. A great mass of roots, twisting about, but reaching for the open air rather than water and food. This photo is of a small portion of an old oak's branches. I also modified the image with Photoshop's Texturizer filter and the following settings: canvas, 100% scaling,

While on a morning dog walk I stopped under one of the high tension power lines that cross the park. The buzzing of the lines caught my attention. I looked up and liked the geometric patterns I saw. So I took several shots as I experimented with alignments and zooms. This is one of the photos that I liked. But look closely at this photo. Is there more to this photo than meets the eye?

Went riding down in Monterey on the former Fort Ord military base. This swing and another like it have always amused me. There's not much of a playground here anymore. They just stand around waiting for better times. But, they still keep smiling.

Grabbed a photo of this Bull Thistle during a muddy walk in Tilden park over in the Berkeley hills. This plant is a non-native species that originated from Europe. It's now common here in the California parks. The spikes on this plant are sharp and strong. A good whack from one of these will give you a nice sting. (p.s. click the photo for a larger image)

This was another mushroom I found on my hike in Briones State Park. Again, All I could figure out from a quick look through the mushroom book was that this was a Manure Mushroom. No idea though. Mushrooms can look so much alike. That's why it's a bit crazy picking and eating these things. You never know. Are you a mushroom expert? An ideas what type of mushroom this is? (p.s. click the photo for a larger image)

The rain is turning everything green around here. Not only that, the mushrooms are starting to pop up. The variations of mushrooms are amazing. Here is one I found on a recent hike in Briones State Park. After getting home I looked for this specimen in my mushroom book. The closest I could match was the Forest Mushroom. Without having the actual mushroom with me it was tough trying to determine the exact type. Are you a mushroom expert?

Nature provides beautiful images in all shapes and forms. This is one in a series of shots that took as an experiment. Held with the sun behind, shining through, and into the camera lens. I'm having a lot of fun with my Canon G3. Having a digital camera, a good one at that, provides so much freedom to experiment. Enjoy. (p.s. click the photo for a larger image)

My bicycle commute takes me through the San Francisco Presidio and along the Crissy Field tidal pond. The views are always amazing along this stretch. The other morning, a Great Blue Heron dropped down to the shore and started strutting around. I rolled to a stop and grabbed a few photos. This is one of them. Enjoy. During the ride I mentioned in my previous post, a fire was burning across the valley above Donner Lake. A constant flow of fire planes were passing overhead on their way to the fire. The area is very dry and the amount of fuel for burning is a bit scary. Have to give a hand to the fire fighters up here. It's a tough job keeping this place from going up in a huge bonfire.

Spent the past weekend up at Donner Pass near Lake Tahoe in a wilderness medical training course. After Saturday's class I got a chance to ride the old railroad route that drops down from the pass towards Truckee. It's a crazy ride that follows along the cliff and through several dark snowsheds. The light was already fading at the start of the ride so we had to turn back without traveling that far. On return to the summit, the sun

Shot this with my new Canon PowerShot G3 up by Donner Lake on 28 June 2003. I liked the way the light was hitting this patch of flowers and also the constrast of the purple to the green background. Can you spot the bee that is loaded with pollen?
